GOP Senator Ron Johnson blocks bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday
A bipartisan effort to make Juneteenth a federal holiday failed in the Senate on Wednesday after Ron Johnson blocked it from advancing.
He also estimated that creating another federal holiday would cost the private sector “up to $600 million a year.” Momentum surged for a Juneteenth holiday amid nationwide Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality and a broader reckoning with the historic economic injustices suffered by Black Americans. Just before the date this year, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared it a holiday for state workers, and said he would push for legislation making it a holiday throughout the state as of next year.
Story continuesJohnson proposed a compromise. He asked the Senate to adopt his amendment to the holiday bill sponsored by Sen. Ed Markey bill that would subtract a day of paid leave from federal workers to compensate for the Juneteenth off-day. Markey objected to that idea.
