Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday announced a multi-million dollar statewide campaign to battle fentanyl, the deadly opioid drug, in Texas.
and country. He made addressing the fentanyl crisis one of his seven emergency items at his State of the State Address for this year’s legislative session. Lawmakers have filed dozens of bills to address the crisis.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. It can be prescribed as a painkiller to treat severe pain after surgeries. The drug can also be highly lethal, with even just two milligrams able to kill a person. Oftentimes fentanyl overdoses occur when taking a pill that has been unknowingly laced with the opioid.
A string of overdoses has impacted many Texas schools, including in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. Two students have overdosed on suspected fentanyl poisoning in the last month.
