Gov. J.B. Pritzker is lifting state requirements that masks be worn in airports and on buses and trains, one day after a federal judge voided the national mask mandate.

After the state announcement, CTA, Metra and the Chicago Department of Aviation also lifted their mask requirements. All three agencies had initially continued to require masks despite the federal ruling, citing the state rules. They all asked riders to be courteous to other passengers once mask requirements ended.

Following the federal ruling Monday, major airlines and Amtrak dropped mask requirements for planes and trains, even as the local agencies kept their requirements. The Transportation Security Administration also said it would no longer be enforcing rules requiring masks. When Pritzker’s office announced the state rule change Tuesday, his office said it was “to align with the ending of the enforcement of the federal mask mandate on public transportation” following the court ruling.

“I’m proud of the work our state has done to fight COVID-19 and protect our most vulnerable,” Pritzker said in a statement. “I continue to urge Illinoisans to follow CDC guidelines and, most importantly, get vaccinated to protect yourself and others.”“IDPH is closely monitoring the status of COVID-19 throughout Illinois and working with our local public health partners to keep the public informed,” Acting IDPH Director Amaal Tokars said in the statement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it continues to recommend people wear masks while indoors on public transportation.
