A day after crews began burning toxic chemicals from several derailed train cars in East Palestine, Ohio, Gov. Mike DeWine on Tuesday said his administration will discuss taking action to improve the condition of the state’s large rail network.

During a meeting with The Plain Dealer/cleveland.com editorial board, DeWine was asked if he was concerned about the state of Ohio’s railways and whether there is a need to better inspect or upgrade them.

The governor noted that railroad regulation is primarily the job of the federal government. “But, having gone through this the last few days you’re dealing with a type of situation that we have – still have – in East Palestine, it certainly grabs your attention,” he said. Ohio has one of the largest and densest railroad networks in the country, with more than 5,100 miles of track crisscrossing the state.

DeWine said railroad officials told him that if such a step wasn’t taken, the tankers could explode, killing or injuring people living around the site of the derailment.
