Cecile McLorin Salvant has a Grammy and received a MacArthur 'genius grant.' One of the bright young lights in jazz singing, she brings her new album 'Ghost Songs' to Houston.
While watching “The Sopranos,” Cécile McLorin Salvant heard a song she wanted to record, and no, it wasn’t Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” Rather she watched Tony Soprano navigate a dream sequence to “Optimistic Voices” a song written by Yip Harburg and featured in “The Wizard of Oz” 50 years before Salvant was born.
“Optimistic Voices” appears on Salvant’s “Ghost Songs,” released last year, paired with Gregory Porter’s “No Love Dying.” “I realized they were perfect together, not only on a musical level,” Salvant says, “but in how they deal with optimism in different ways. And I have ‘The Sopranos’ to thank for that.’”
Since releasing “Cécile & the Jean-Francois Bonnel Paris Quintet” in 2010, she has refused to simply check the Great American Songbook out from the library. Rather she finds a more expansive approach, where such vocal classics, new originals and some square pegs like Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” coexist in a lovingly assembled nest.
