Boasting a roster and starting lineup full of battle-tested upperclassmen, Grand Oaks was an opportunist Wednesday afternoon in its District 13-6A softball clash versus Conroe.Freshman catcher Mayce Burkett and sophomore shortstop Kaitlynn Torres each delivered two-run home runs within moments of each other to lift the Grizzlies to a 4-2 win over host Conroe.
“We knew we had to jump on them,” Torres said. “Attack them before they attacked us. We wanted to keep their energy low and keep our energy high.” “I saw it low and inside and I thought I could get my barrel to it,” Burkett said. “My big thing was trying to score Abby. The first at-bat , I hesitated a little bit but that second at-bat, I knew she wasn’t going to beat me. Any ball she threw over the plate, I was going to hit.”
“Mayce has ice water in her veins for a freshman. Put her in the four-hole and it doesn’t faze her at all.”
