Dozens of farms throughout a seven-county area offer the opportunity to tour their orchards and fields and go home with a cornucopia of produce picked with their own hands.
Quarry Hill Orchard in Berlin HeightsBERLIN HEIGHTS, Ohio - The proprietors of Quarry Hill Orchards, in Berlin Heights, want visitors to walk away with an understanding of farming, along with their baskets of apples, peaches and berries.
William died in 1964, leaving his wife, Margaret, and Ben’s father, Bill, then in middle school, to carry on. Around 1979, Bill’s mother came up with the name Quarry Hill, honoring the industry that once thrived in the region. Ben Gammie, a third-generation farmer at Quarry Hill Orchards, in Berlin Heights, thins out the crop on apples trees to help the rest of the fruit grow. To get the fruit you want, she recommends calling ahead and checking with staff to find out what is ready.Orchard Hill grows “fun, unique varieties” of apples, Ben Gammie said, such as crimson crisp and pixie crunch. They even grow pawpaws.
