EXCLUSIVE: Greater Manchester's NHS now has a deficit of £186.5m - a rise of more than £800,000 every day over the last four months
Greater Manchester’s NHS has plunged a further £100m into debt - meaning the deficit has spiralled by more than £800,000 a day over the last four months, the Manchester Evening News can reveal.
What is the Greater Manchester Integrated Care System? Integrated care systems are partnerships that bring together NHS organisations, local authorities and others to plan services, improve health and reduce inequalities. In Greater Manchester, the ICS provides health and care for a diverse population of approximately 3.1m people across 10 localities and 66 neighbourhoods, according to NHS England.
That deficit grew to £86.5m by August, with a warning that the deficit could grow to £164.1m by the end of the year, according to a report presented to the ICS’ finance committee on Monday, August 7. The ‘escalating’ cost of mental health out-of-area placements - where Greater Manchester mental health patients are sent to other locations across the country, sometimes because there is not enough beds or care available for them in this region – was another reason cited for the deficit.
Jackie Murray, the corporate director of operational finance, told the finance committee that Greater Manchester’s NHS is ‘identifying opportunities for cost mitigation’ and ‘driving for improvements in financial governance’. Other members of the finance committee said the challenges are ‘absolutely in a turnaround position’, with spending reviews happening in ‘every area of expenditure’ across the system.
