With much of the original Stretford Mall set to be demolished as part of a £28m 'rebirth' of Stretford town centre, we look back on Greater Manchester's original Arndale. Work is already underway to redevelop Stretford's town centre with hopes of transforming it to imitate the success of other trendy areas like Chorlton, Didsbury and Altrincham
The first stage saw the unveiling of the ultra modern, fully air conditioned shopping mall with tropical fish tanks and fountains. By the time it opened the precinct boasted three large supermarkets and a restaurant, as well as car parking space enough for 550 vehicles. And in 2018, a large section of the mall's empty retail space, including O'Brien's pub, which was part of the complex, was torn down as part of a £2m redevelopment. Adding: "I couldn't get an exact date on the last time this was open for business, but by the looks of things, it doesn’t look like the place was around to welcome in the '90s."
