The government has announced a significant investment in homelessness prevention services for Greater Manchester, allocating £40 million to tackle the issue next year.
Greater Manchester will get £40m from the government to tackle homelessness next year. An extra £92.3m is being pumped into councils across the North West as the government announces the 'largest ever' investment in homelessness prevention services. The additional cash is part of a nearly £1bn package to tackle, reduce and prevent homelessness.
It comes after the government announced a £500,000 boost for town halls across Greater Manchester as part of an emergency fund to protect rough sleepers from the cold weather this winter. The government has now announced extra funding for next year. The funding announcement follows warnings from housing charity Shelter that 16,500 people will be homeless across Greater Manchester this Christmas - half of them children. While all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester are dealing with homelessness, the problem is most acute in the city of Manchester, where 4,326 children - 9,042 people in total - are said to be without a home. Manchester council will get the lion's share of the funding for the next financial year with a total of £14.8m from four government grants. Salford will receive the second largest sum with nearly £6.5m while the Greater Manchester Combined Authority gets £5.8m. Bury, Stockport and Trafford has the smallest allocation from the four grants with £1.3m, £1.8m and £1.5m respectively, while Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside each get between £2m and £3m. Bolton and Wigan council will each get between £3m and £4m this year. The funding comes from the homelessness prevention, rough sleeping prevention and recovery and rough sleeping drug and alcohol treatment grants as well as the rough sleeping accommodation programme. Councils in Greater Manchester received a £3m top-up in the homelessness prevention grant this year with the government putting an additional £11m towards our city-region next yea
