Holidaymakers have been warned that Athens is struggling to cope with the number of tourists. The city’s mayor has spoken out about the situation as the city faces the “burdens” of year-round tourism.
As a result, the destination can’t keep up with visitor demands. Writing in local news site ekthaimerini.com in the spring, the mayor of Athens Haris Doukas warned the city was struggling with a a tourism problemHe described the income that Athens received in 2023 as ‘disturbing’ despite the fact it was “one of the best years of tourism”. He said the revenue collected was £.2.7million euros, just over half of that collected in 2007, despite an increase in hotels and holiday rentals.
The mayor added that Athens is struggling to cope with the demands for its services, “which creates serious dysfunctions in the city and the tourism product itself”. He also cited the pressure on the city as a year-round destination saying “the benefits as well as the burden from tourist arrivals are not limited to some months of the summer.”
