WNBA star Brittney Griner is being moved to a Russian penal colony, according to multiple reports. Griner’s transfer began Friday, but her attorneys and U.S. officials were not aware she had been moved until Tuesday.

Last month, the White House said it has a “substantial offer” on the table and has urged Russia to accept it or “bring a strong counteroffer.” The deal includes a swap for arms dealer Viktor Bout in exchange for Griner and Paul Whelan, an American arrested in Russia on espionage charges. Whelan was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2020 and has repeatedly denied the charges and asserted his innocence.
