Andrés Giménez’s two-out RBI single in the seventh followed an RBI sacrifice fly by Josh Naylor as Cleveland rallied to victory.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — All-Stars make big plays in big moments, and nobody likes big moments more this season than Guardians second baseman Andrés Giménez.

One batter earlier, Naylor fell behind in the count to Fulmer , but drove a slider deep to left for his first sac fly of the year, scoring Myles Straw with the tying run. “Gimi didn’t hit his ball, but he hit it,” Francona said. “Naylor kind of reached out and got enough to get a sac fly. That’s a heckuva lot better than striking out. Then, when we do put balls in play, guys get themselves in good positions to move up. It gives us a little bit more of a chance.”“The game dictates what my approach is and the adjustment I make for that part of the game,” Giménez said via interpreter Agustin Rivero.

It looked like Guardians starter Zach Plesac would finally get the run support he desperately needed when Cleveland took an early lead with three runs in the first, but Detroit scored five straight to pull ahead by two before the Guards mounted the final rally. After a Willi Castro RBI single tied the score at 3, Jonathan Schoop sent a bouncing ball up the middle that Plesac fielded and threw to Amed Rosario in an effort to start a double play. But Rosario’s momentum carried him too far away to reach the bag, and his throw to first was not in time to get Schoop.

“We have an inning where we didn’t help him and it kind of gets away,” Francona said. “By the end of the inning he’s over 30 and it’s like I hate taking him out, but I don’t want to hurt him. It just gets to a point where you’ve got to make a change.”
