When Southampton visit the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, they will arrive at Manchester City having based their recent transfer policy on the Blues.
Southampton are not the only club to base their transfer policy on Manchester City's finely-tuned approach - but they are the most obvious.
City have earned almost £200m in transfer fees from selling academy players in just three summers. In add-ons, that figure surpasses the double-hundred million mark and plenty of players are thriving in the top two divisions. Wilcox did set up a loan move for Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who had achieved promotion with Burnley a year earlier, agreeing an obligation to buy on the condition of promotion. Saints' play-off final victory over Leeds last summer guaranteed another £20m into City's budget.
Southampton are joint-bottom of the Premier League and have lost both senior figures they signed from City. Manager Russell Martin is insistent they will not abandon their principles in terms of playing style, even if it results in a relegation battle.
