Guardiola needed his side to dig in and Phillips took the shovel. His energy and positioning helped keep the midfield tight and nullify the threat of Gibbs-White.
The coming week could make or break for good Phillips' time at City and if it's the latter then City will likely have to swallow a loss on their £42m investment.
