Hailey Baptiste’s biggest win of the year came, as good things often do, in the wake of hours of mild anxiety and a panic-induced shopping spree.
“His agent Rich Kleiman told me he was going to be here on the weekend,” Tiafoe said of Durant. “... I mean, [Wizards center] Daniel Gafford came. KCP, who just won with Denver Nuggets. Some mixed exposure here tonight. It was a great atmosphere. Everyone in D.C. who is super excited, I got, like, 55 tickets, something crazy, friends and family.”
Baptiste started her weekend by heading to Tennis Topia, her favorite local outfitter since childhood, to buy a new set of gear — shoes, clothes and everything but a racket, which she figured she would borrow from a friend. Her bags were finally located later Saturday, and her father drove to Reagan National Airport to collect them with two hours to spare.The frantic start led to two wins in qualifying and a blistering beginning to Tuesday’s match against Pliskova.
