The musical is full of important messages and catchy songs that can be enjoyed by the whole family

Hairspray is one of my favourite musicals of all time and since I’ve seen it a few times at in various productions I had high hopes for the show coming to Nottingham Theatre Royal, and it did not disappoint. Throughout the whole show the set design was very simple but effective, all of the scene changes were done so seamlessly that if you blinked you really could miss it.

There was also a screen used at the back of the stage to project things onto at key points, such as to introduce the Corny Collins Show or during the song 'I Know Where I've Been' by Michelle Ndegwa as Motormouth Maybelle. It really helped elevate the musical to the versions I’ve seen before and make the whole experience that much better for the audience.

The costumes were also amazing throughout, everything from the shoes to dresses was perfect for the 60s, and I can’t get over how many sequins and sparkles must have been used throughout. Alexandra Emmerson-Kirkby did an amazing job as Tracey Turnblad, her singing was beautifully and she really embodied the character.

Soloman Davy was a great choice for Link, Reece Richards was an amazing Seaweed and Freya McMahon was the perfect Penny and really made the eccentric character her own. Neil Hurst also had the audience in stitches with his portrayal of Edna Turnblad, especially when he and Dermot Canavan as Wilbur Turnblad did their duet.

. The evening also ended with confetti showering down on the audience and the whole theatre singing and dancing to 'You Can't Stop The Beat' with many visitors still singing the tune on their way out.
