The death toll from a magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Haiti has risen to at least 304
At least 304 people were killed and hundreds remained missing Saturday when a powerful earthquake struck Haiti, causing buildings to collapse in the nation’s southern peninsula in the latest calamity to strike one of the world’s poorest countries.
The magnitude 7.2 earthquake was more powerful than the 7.0 quake that hit Haiti in 2010 and killed some 200,000. This time around, however, the quake’s epicenter was farther away from the crowded capital, near the southern town of Saint-Louis du Sud, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. “There is a lot of destruction,” said Jose Flecher, a local journalist in Les Cayes, a city of around 125,000 people about 20 miles from Saint-Louis du Sud. “The hospitals are overwhelmed. There are a lot of injured.”
The death toll was expected to rise. In addition to the fatalities, there were hundreds missing and more than 1,800 injured, Haiti’s civil-protection agency said. First responders and civilians pulled many survivors from the rubble of collapsed homes, the agency said.of President Jovenel Moïse in the capital, Port-au-Prince. The nation has also been bracing itself for Tropical Storm Grace, expected to bring heavy rainfall early next week as it marches across the Caribbean.
