Hamdani's US Attorney nomination for southern Texas confirmed by Senate Judiciary Committee
Hamdani, 51, was born in Manchester, England to parents from Surat in the Indian state of Gujarat. When he was 10, his family moved to Euless, where his father drove a taxi and his mother worked odd jobs at restaurants and retailers before being hired at Delta Airlines.
Hamdani earned a bachelor's in finance at University of Texas and a law degree at University of Houston. He was a commercial litigator for two private firms before opening his own firm in 2005. He began volunteering to represent Muslim and South Asian men who had been called in by the FBI after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Initially, as a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Kentucky, Hamdani prosecuted drug, gun, fraud and immigration cases. He then spent five years in Washington, D.C. as a trial attorney and deputy chief in the counter-terrorism unit, overseeing 12 prosecutors. He won awards from the National Security Division and the Attorney General.
