It’s hardly the worst statement ever made, especially as the book is more than 80 years old. But, in my job as a professor of mathematics, I am often asked why there are so few women in maths and related fields like physics, computer science and engineering. This is borne out in the data: a gender disparity that starts in school and grows as students age.

It’s death by a thousand cuts., the notable education reformer, who told a committee of MPs that girls shun physics A-level as they dislike “hard maths”. Or the list of Field’s medalists which has an almost embarrassing deficit of ethnic or gender diversity. Only two women have ever been awarded the prize in its long history.
Then when the degree gets hard , there are echoes of those responses. The women, who had always been told that they were the outliers – thatwere the ones that didn’t belong – feared the PhD was difficult because they weren’t good enough to do it. The men, meanwhile, who had been reassured they were clever, knew the work was hard, but could shrug off any deeper concerns.
