Review: Hannah Gadsby discusses marriage and family in “Something Special,” an unfortunately feel-good set on Netflix
’s Netflix specials with some trepidation: I know straight men are going to get slapped around a bit, not unjustifiably, but the laughs and the architectural wonders of a precisely constructed monologue made “Nanette” and “Douglas” worth a little good-natured pummeling. That said, I’d rather be punched in the face than watch “Something Special” again.My viewing companion remarked that Gadsby has “gone soft,” and it is not an inaccurate observation. Or a happy one.
Among the things that made “Nanette” such a sensation was the way Gadsby, who uses they as a pronoun, operated as a biting social critic as well as a standup comic—even while disavowing standup comedy. They could also operate as a spoken-word magician: In “Douglas,” for instance, Gadsby told you what was going to happen, showed their cards up front, and you were still amazed when your queen of hearts popped out of the deck.
