in Texas for the first time included discrimination as a factor, contributing to six of the 52 pregnancy-related deaths analyzed in the report. A recent survey of 1,528 women in Harris County, presented at the conference by UTHealth School of Public Health Professor Kimberly Baker, found that 40 percent of participants had experienced some type of discrimination in a health care setting. About 30 percent did not seek care due to concerns about discrimination.

Among the speakers was Kay Matthews, founder and executive director of Shades of Blue Project, a Houston-based nonprofit that focuses on improving mental health for new or expectant mothers. Mental health conditions were the second-leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in Texas in 2019, data show.

She said she eventually realized that mental health support systems for Black women are non-existent or poorly managed. She created her own method to help people of color get through postpartum depression and other mood disorders related to pregnancy.
