The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will have a new home in 2021
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of AzkabanHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince—will be available via NBCUniversal’s linear broadcast networks, which include not just NBC, but also E!, USA Network, Bravo, and Syfy.
Not that any of this should come as a total surprise. In 2016, before both WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal would eventually launch streaming services, NBCUniversalthe on-air and digital rights to the Harry Potter franchise from Warner Bros. through April 2025. “We are pleased to bring one of the most successful and enduring global franchises to the networks of NBCUniversal,”, Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution president, said in a statement at the time. “We feel this is a perfect new home for the Harry Potter films and the upcoming Fantastic Beasts films.
Unfortunately for Schlesinger and Warner Bros., not having the Harry Potter franchise as part of HBO Max became a source of consternation for the conglomerate. “You can’t have our experience without Harry Potter,” HBO Max chief content officerin January. But despite his statement, the expectation was that Harry Potter would not appear on HBO Max at launch. To the surprise of many, however, all eight films were part of the initial HBO Max offering back in April .
Now there’s a little more clarity: at least for the next 20 days—and perhaps again in 2021 after the Peacock window closes.
