That’s one way to put it; another would be that Warner Bros. allowed the Potter franchise to become tied up with NBCUniversal when the two megacorporations struck a deal in 2016. Said Warner Bros.’ worldwide television distribution president,: “We are pleased to bring one of the most successful and enduring global franchises to the networks of NBCUniversal. We feel this is a perfect new home for the Harry Potter films and the upcoming Fantastic Beasts films.

In hindsight, maybe Warner Bros. executives would now consider the “perfect new home” for Harry, Ron, and Hermione to be HBO Max. The company’s streaming platform, set to launch in May at a price point of $15 per month, will house hundreds of classic Warner Bros. films and numerous television shows produced by the studio—but not what has arguably been Warner Bros.’ crowning box office achievement for nearly the last 20 years.

HBO Max is far from the only legacy-media streaming platform that can’t quite get a grip on its own iconic productions.The Big Bang Theory, a CBS sitcom, will also find its streaming home on the Warner Bros. service. The Harry Potter films, meanwhile, will be part of NBCUniversal’s new platform, Peacock, which won’t feature episodes ofWhat does this mean to the consumer?
