Headteacher calls for New Cross Fire to be included on National Curriculum by S_Fleary1

REMEMBRANCE: Headteacher Dean Gordon and Executive Headteacher Mickey Kelly lead the remembrance walk with pupils to the sight of the New Cross Fire Dean Gordon is the headteacher at Grinling Gibbons Primary School in Deptford, southeast London.

“It was like what else needs to happen to us black people for the government to realise that we are here, we are important and we should be valued.” Mr Gordon said given that his is school is made up of predominately black pupils it was important they learn not only about the tragedy but the robust and powerful community action that followed.

For the first time, they were joined by delegations from nearby Addey and Stanhope and Deptford Green secondary schools.Mr Dean Gordon – Headteacher at Grinling Gibbons Primary School Mr Gordon believes his annual anniversary remembrance walk is not something that should be “kept quiet” and he wants the public to “spread the word” and says he would welcome other schools to joining him next year.Mr Gordon toldHe believes at the time, the fire wasn’t seen as important because the victims were black and this demonstrated that black lives did not matter.

“Being of Jamaican heritage, I felt connected to the victims because they were all from the Caribbean, and I was grateful to have attended the memorial sites to pay my respects.” School Advocate, Zainab said: “I felt empowered when I thought about my reason for being at the memorial sites, and although I still feel resentful that so many young, innocent lives were taken, I was also thankful for my representation at the memorials because it allowed me to speak for others through my poetry and to pay my respects to the victims.”

Mr Kelly said schools within the federation decided to start the walk on the 40th anniversary of the fire because they felt “nothing else was happening – it seemed as if people had forgotten or it was just something that was done behind closed doors.” He said it is important to remind children and the communities of the Black People’s Day of Action that helped to unite the sentiments of all Black people across Britain.
