A doctor has explained the symptoms and what action you should take
Holidaymakers may need to take precautions amid a “significant spike” in Covid cases in the Balearic Islands, with local health chiefs saying they are caught in a wave of infections. The head of the Microbiology Service at Son Espases Hospital in Palma, Dr Antonio Oliver, said the current number of cases is higher than those recorded last winter, reports Majorca Daily Bulletin.
He said: “Now there is a significant increase in the number of cases, which has been sustained for the last eight weeks. We will be close to the peak, but so far it has been rising." The surge is being driven by new strains of the virus known as FLiRT. One of the FLiRT strains, KP.3, is also being blamed for a 24% increase in hospitalisation in the UK.
The latest symptoms caused by the strain are reported to be a fever that lasts two or three days, a cough and muscle pain. Dr Oliver advised people wash their hands, avoid closed-in spaces and wear masks in crowds. He said: “These are the basic measures.... They are common sense."
