A new heatmap has finally proven some of London’s boroughs are hotter than others. Our thoughts go out to the sweltering people of Tower Hamlets.
LondonThe map, created by Friends of the Earth and TerraSulis, has shown areas with largest amount of green space are able to remain cooler.
But neighbourhoods such as Camden and Westminster were able to benefit from being close to large green areas such as Primrose Hill and Hyde Park. Meanwhile areas with no trees can be up to 5C hotter than leafier areas, with places such as Elephant and Castle and Hackney experiencing more intense heat.
Mike Childs, head of science, policy and research at Friends of the Earth, said: ‘We know that extreme weather, including heatwaves, is becoming more frequent and severe due to the climate crisis.‘But not everyone is affected equally, with the most marginalised communities the hardest hit in the UK and overseas.
