A heat wave expected to last several days hit the Western U.S. Wednesday, likely stressing the electricity grid and raising the risk of wildfires in a region already in a historic drought.
High temperatures in the 90s and the 100s are expected through the Labor Day weekend in much of Northern and Southern California. Temperatures across the western part of the U.S. are expected to befrom Saturday into next week, according to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center. “We are anticipating this extreme heat to be a length and duration likes of which we haven’t experienced in some time,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said at a press conference on Wednesday. Mr. Newsom said he signed an executive order that would allow the state to produce more energy ahead of the peak in demand projected for this weekend. The order would help procure more electricity supply, he said.
