Parts of the UK are currently in the grip of an intense heatwave that has people reaching for the ice cream and seeking refuge in the shade
, a heatwave is defined as three consecutive days where the daily maximum temperatures reach or surpass a specific threshold. However, this threshold varies depending on the region.In Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Northern England, and South West England, the designated threshold is 25C. Conversely, certain areas in South East England have a higher threshold of 28C.
For Wednesday , the forecaster predicted most areas to have a “dry, very warm and generally sunny day” after an initial cloudy start. However, isolated thunderstorms are possible across northern Scotland. Plenty of"prolonged sunshine" is expected to continue to Thursday, with an"odd shower expected in the far west".
As the week progresses, the forecaster says there is"a continuing risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms at times in the south and west, whereas further north and east there should be some more reliable drier interludes, then perhaps becoming more generally a little more settled by the end of this period."
