The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for heavy rain and snow across Scotland, predicting significant disruption in time for Hogmanay. The yellow alert, in effect from midnight on Monday, December 30 to midnight on Tuesday, December 31, warns of persistent and widespread rainfall with potential totals of 50 to 140mm, particularly in western Scotland. Snowfall is also expected, especially over higher ground, with 10-20cm accumulation possible above 150-200 meters. Milder air pushing in will turn snow back to rain, but rapid melting could lead to flooding. Strong winds may exacerbate the conditions, leading to blizzard conditions in some areas.

The Met Office has issued an updated severe weather warning for heavy rain and snow as it says ‘significant disruption’ is expected in time for Hogmanay .

The initial warning predicted lots of rain, however this has since been updated and reads: “Heavy rain and snow may bring significant disruption in the build up to New Year. “North and east of Perthshire, precipitation is likely to fall as snow, especially over high ground, with 10-20cm accumulating above 150-200 meters, with several cm accumulating at lower elevations away from windward coasts. As milder air pushes in, snow will turn back to rain, and any rapid snow melt will contribute to flooding in places.

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday look set to be milder in temperature, much like the past week, with highs of 11°C - although by New Year’s Eve, evening temperatures will fall to a chilly 2C.
