Sea surface temperatures remain unusually cold for mid-summer
A mid-summer swell will produce periodically heavy surf and strong rip currents through late Monday at San Diego County beaches. And monsoonal moisture could spark isolated thunder and lightning from the deserts to the coast, says the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say lightning flashed several times offshore between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Sunday. The bolts were sparked by warm, unstable air that is flowing into the region from Baja California. The monsoon isn’t expected to ease until Tuesday. Swells out of the south and the west have been producing surf in the 3 foot to 6 foot range this weekend at many beaches, notably Pacific Beach and Sunset Cliffs. The swells will diminish Sunday night, but still prove to be powerful for inexperienced surfers.
Forecasters also note that sea surface temperatures are still largely in the 62 to 68 degree range, which is about 8 to 10 degrees below average for this time of year. Onshore winds are pushing the warm, upper layer of the ocean away from the coast, allowing cooler, deeper water to rise. It’s called upwelling.
