Junior loves to run the football, but his best position may be as a safety on the defensive side
Kevin Allen III was in the fourth grade when he started tagging along with cousins to watch Helix High football games. He was on the sideline for a playoff game against Oceanside and stood awestruck watching.
Today, he’s a 16-year-old junior and his dream has morphed into reality. The Highlanders are the fourth-ranked team in the section and Allen is a major reason for the storied program’s continued success. At 5-feet-11, 178 pounds, Allen has good size for a running back, particularly for a junior. Log onto the internet and you can catch his video highlights. Once he’s in open space, the kid’s got a burst and few are going to catch him.
Jason Van is a former Helix running back. He holds the school record for most yards rushing in a game, 382 on 11 carries. He has coached Helix backs for years and says that Allen is a different type back than his predecessors. “He has the ability to play college football, there’s no doubt,” says Jones. “At what position, we don’t know yet. He’s probably best at safety.”
