The U.S. could see its first contingent election in more than a hundred years.

House elections that will likely prove important in the fight for a majority of state delegations include Alaska and Montana’s seats — both only have one representative statewide and are currently held by Republicans. Democrats will have to defend narrow delegation majorities in Arizona, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada and New Hampshire, while Republicans need to hold onto a one-seat majority in Florida.

With Amash retiring this year, his seat is likely to go to a Republican and tie the Michigan delegation, while a potentially close election in Kansas’could tie that state’s delegation, which currently has a Republican majority. Politico notes it’s also likely that Democrats in Pennsylvania will pick up more seats and can break that state’s current partisan tie, thanks to recent redistricting.
