Arlington is raising money to help Ukrainian refugees fleeing to its sister city in Germany.
Bad Königshofen has a population of fewer than 7,000 residents, but in recent weeks hundreds of Ukrainians have flooded the northern Bavarian town seeking to escape Russia’s invasion.Arlington’s relationship with Bad Königshofen began in 1951, when theThe group made an unscheduled stop in the city because a German tour participant had a pen pal in Arlington.
During the stop, the town manager told then-mayor Tom Vandergriff about the difficulties his town faced because of its location at the border between West and East Germany. Hundreds of people fleeing the communist regime in the east had overwhelmed his small German town, and there was a shortage of food and clothing.
Vandergriff and the Arlington Chamber of Commerce coordinated a community drive to collect food, clothing and gifts.
