When you're part of a couple, career decisions aren't just about you. Here's a playbook for navigating them and coming out stronger on the other side:
Several years ago, my husband and I were both facing a career crossroads., the social media agency we co-founded. Dave was the CEO, visionary, and the face of the business, while I oversaw operations and client relations. To me, it was the perfect arrangement and division of labor.
Whether you work with your significant other or not, big career decisions like these can be among the most stressful situations couples face. After all, a job change means adjusting nearly everything: the way you spend 10+ hours a day, the amount of time you’re able to be at home, what might be required of your partner, how much money you make. Sometimes, it’s even a shift of your identity.
Dave and I have a couple of approaches. First, we schedule monthly date nights. We’re currently working through the dates and conversations outlined in the book, which have brought to light a lot of topics we might be tempted to avoid! Tanya and her husband realized that to have the life they wanted, both of them would need to make changes—and sacrifices. When they met, she was working for an ad agency, where she was working 70-80 hours a week and traveling several times a month. “It was fine because my career was my priority,” she said. But then she and her husband got serious about having a family. “I had to take a hard look at what my next phase in life was going to be,” she says.
Tanya says it’s been a great dynamic for their family. “I lead my team at the office and he leads our team at home,” she explains. “We couldn't do it without each other.” For example, I didn’t necessarily think Dave and I should have a different plan—deep down, I knew that his move to Likeable Local was the right move for our family. But in order for me to be completely on board with the change, I had to get any feelings of resentment off my chest and not let them fester.
