Mark Wells bought goods for himself on West Lothian Council’s accounts while in charge of the school budget
A high-flying head teacher destroyed his career and his marriage by embezzling money from his award-winning school.
The cracks began to show after he got away with using the school’s Amazon account to buy a white marquee for staff and children to shelter under during the Covid pandemic.He then used the ‘school funds’ card to pay his membership fees at Kingsfield Golf Club where he was treasurer claiming he was launching a P6 golf starter programme.
Finally, when he moved house he used the school’s purchase card to hire a van from a local company, claiming he used it to collect items from another school. The findings of a report by the council’s counter fraud department were passed to police on 18 November that year and Wells gave a ‘no comment’ interview on 21 April 2022 before being charged.
Mr Hay went on: “As a result of his success at Springfield Primary, in January 2020 he was asked to run a second local school simultaneously and in April 2020 Springfield became one of three Covid primary schools in West Lothian.
