Clark Chris Goertz celebrates his touchdown run against Roosevelt on Friday, Oct. 21,2022 at Farris Stadium.Clark got an 18-yard touchdown pass from Phillip Metzger to Michael Vasquez with 56 seconds to go to give the Cougars a 34-29 win over Roosevelt in a wild District 28-6A matchup Friday night at Farris Stadium.
The win is Clark’s first over Roosevelt since 2014 and snaps a five-game winning streak for Roosevelt in the series.Clark seemingly had control of the game following a 10-yard touchdown run by Chris Goertz with 9:39 to go in the fourth quarter, holding a 28-14 lead over the Rough Riders. However, Roosevelt got a 1-yard touchdown run from Seay and rallied from a 14-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter to take a 29-28 lead. The second score came on a 15-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Amir Calhoun to Devon Tennison-Sheppard with 1:11 remaining.
The Rough Riders then faked the extra point and Calhoun found Tennison-Sheppard again for the conversion to put Roosevelt ahead. However, a long kickoff return and facemask penalty set up the late-game heroics that kept the Cougars’ postseason hopes alive for another week.The win snaps a two-game losing streak for Clark and keeps the Cougars in the chase for a playoff spot from District 28-6A. The Cougars can now make the postseason with a win against Brandeis next week. Roosevelt saw its playoff hopes come to an end with the Rough Riders’ fourth loss in their last five games.
