Hiker, 79, reported missing in Borrego Springs; finds his way to camp a day later [Breaking]
A hiker who went missing Tuesday in Borrego Springs managed to find his way back to a campground a day later with only a few scrapes and cuts, a sheriff’s officials said.
Dawes Eddy, 79, of Spokane, Wash., was reported missing after an early morning hike Tuesday morning in Anza Borrego Desert State Park, said sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Jenkins in a statement. Eddy was due back from climbing the San Ysidro Mountain East Peak around 3 p.m. Tuesday, but he did not make it back down.
Deputies, search and rescue volunteers, state park rangers and a Sheriff’s Department helicopter launched an extensive search effort Tuesday to find Eddy, authorities said.Jenkins said someone spotted the hiker heading back to the Palm Canyon campgrounds just after 9 a.m. Wednesday. He had minor injuries but was in “good health.”
Eddy told rescue crews he is an experienced hiker who’d previously hiked Mount Everest. When he was unable to finish his hike on time, he hunkered down for the night and used his survival skills to stay warm, Jenkins said.
