The Grade II-listed St Ann's Allotments have been handed back to Nottingham City Council after they were reportedly unable to guarantee funding

Historic Nottingham allotments have been handed back to the city council after managers said reduced funding had proved "too hard to overcome." The Grade II*-listed St Ann's Allotments have been managed since 2008 by Hungerhill Developments Ltd , a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Renewal Trust charity.

Cherry Wells, director of HDL and chief executive of The Renewal Trust, said: "We have worked with many partners and especially the gardeners to bring a derelict site back from the brink, have ensured its future protection through a Grade II* Historic England listing, registered it as an Asset of Community Value and secured over £5 million of external investment.

HDL said at the time: "All complaints... are treated seriously and dealt with appropriately, balancing the rights of all the allotment holders and the wider community. Any allegations of unfair eviction are denied and we are delighted to welcome 46 new tenants this year and to introduce 20 new starter plots which has improved access for local people."

Revenue from the land was to be applied to the maintenance of the bridge across the River Trent, with Hunger Hill first being enclosed with plots in 1604-05 with around 30 tenants. Recent years have seen the allotments being visited by Monty Don, the Birmingham Royal Ballet and BBC Gardeners' World.
