Conservation architects will now 'consider options for the restoration and associated cost' of the fire-damaged structure, which featured at the Glasgow garden festival

Rutherglen ’s historic bandstand is to be dismantled and assessed by specialists, with a conservation architect being appointed to “consider options for the restoration and associated cost” of the 110-year-old B-listed structure.

The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories, and allows you to customise your page to the sections that matter most to you.Planning consent for the removal of the listed structure was approved last week, with the official application to South Lanarkshire Council stating that the request to “demolish” the structure is “solely for removal from site ... to allow it to be restored remotely from park”.

“A specialist conservation architect is also being appointed to consider options for the restoration and associated cost of the bandstand. At this stage it is too early to determine what future work may be needed, or its costs.” It is a B-listed structure – as are the fountain and the park’s Mill Street gateway – and its official entry on the Historic Environment Scotland website includes a “statement of special interest” highlighting that the “bandstand was on display at the 1988 Glasgow garden festival; subsequently returned to Overtoun Park, but to a slightly different location”.

It adds: “Standing on a stepped base at the top of the High Street, was the first building to be reached on entering the site from Bell’s Bridge was a major venue for day-to-day events and concerts. A picnic area featured a giant teapot, cup and saucer sponsored by Stoke-on-Trent as thanks for being allowed the use of the bandstand in 1986.”
