Historic Webster school building to get face-lift, fourth use in 83 years
“We had a good of people who went to school there and there was a good bit of community support for saving it,” said Paul Miller, Clear Creek ISD assistant superintendent of support services. To that end, a portion of the old school has not met the wrecking ball, and now the plan is to repurpose about 7,500 square feet of the original building for its fourth use in 83 years.
The building, one of a dwindling number of art deco structures in the Bay Area, was designed by R.G. Schneider, a Houston architect who specialized in designing public schools during the Depression, particularly on the Gulf Coast. “We have been working on demolishing the rest of the building around it and cleaning the exterior of the building that had decades of coatings on it,” Miller said. “We’ve gotten it down to the original stonework and architectural details from the art deco era. So, we’re ready to start work on restoring it back to make it look like it originally looked.”
