This year's service was even more special since the Holocaust Memorial is now a national landmark.
Each year, Kol Israel holds a fall service to remember the six million Jewish men, women and children who perished in the Holocaust. It takes place at the National Holocaust Memorial at Zion Memorial Park in Bedford Heights, Ohio. The memorial became the first freestanding Holocaust National Memorial in the United States in 2022.
A seventh candle was lit to honor the children that were lost and an eighth was lit by a World War II veteran to honor the liberators. “I talk a lot to people, the kids especially,” Gelbart said. “In fact, I’m going to do it again this coming month in Youngstown and in Cleveland. And I enjoy telling the younger people what really happened. But I’m proud to have come to this United States at the age of 18 and served in the American Army because not many people in this world show the love that this country does for us.”
“I couldn’t understand why,” she said, adding that when she sees antisemtism on the news it makes her angry and upset. “Why do you have to pick on a certain people? Why can’t people just get along?”
