Homeless give thanks: Students share an appreciation of life in Thanksgiving essays | Opinion

Each Friday morning, The Stewpot homeless ministry at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas hosts a writers’ workshop. And once a month, the ministry publishes STREETZine, a member publication of the International Network of Street Papers. Below are Thanksgiving essays from six contributors to those programs.I’m grateful to God for everything he has offered to happen in my life.

Some people are happy with material things, such as a car and a house. My gratitude stems from my relationship with God. Everything that I have, have had, and will have comes through God’s provision. That includes my talents, my gifts, my comfort and my discipline. Most of all I am thankful for my heavenly father and my lord and savior, Jesus Christ. God gave me another chance at life. I am now able to walk in the right direction. If it were not for my beliefs, life would not be the same.

Other things that I am grateful for include The Stewpot’s Writers’ Workshop. And I am grateful for working for the STREETZine. Keeping ourselves in a positive state brings about joy and encourages us to spread that joy to others. Living in gratitude is essential for a person to truly enjoy all life has to offer.

Good things come hard and take time. Gratefulness at times is miscommunicated or does not easily produce a validation. Still, I can say in confidence that I thank the good Lord daily for it all. When I was a youngster, my family taught me some lessons that would last a lifetime. Leading the way was my grandma. Grandma taught us the true meaning behind Sunday and Sunday school. Respect was key, and faith and the promises of God were on center stage. Grandma made sure that everybody went to church. I’m grateful for that one.

But my mother could spot these feelings right away. Mom said, “Son, life is like playing a chance word game. You can’t play unless you take a chance.”
