Transport in the former British colony was paralyzed as Hong Kong’s metro system stayed shut on Saturday, following Friday’s chaos, in which police shot a teenage boy and pro-democracy protesters torched businesses and metro stations. “The extreme violence clearly illustrated that Hong Kong’s public safety is widely endangered,” she said in a pre-recorded television announcement.
Demonstrators have used face masks to conceal their identities in increasingly violent protests that have roiled the city for four months.
