Health officials remain locked in 'commercial' talks with a US pharmaceutical giant on supply of breakthrough cystic fibrosis medicines
Hopes are high that cystic fibrosis medicines will be made available to patients in Northern Ireland after a deal was struck with a US pharmaceutical company and the NHS for the drugs to be made available in England.
The three drugs - Orkambi, Symkevi, and Kaftrio - have been available to eligible cystic fibrosis patients in the UK as part of a deal reached in 2019 to collect data on their effectiveness. Speaking about her little girl Robyn, she said: "If she doesn't get this, it will take years off her life. I will only get maybe 20 or 30 years with her, and if she gets the drug she could live until she's 80."
On Thursday, NICE gave approval for the life-changing cystic fibrosis modulator drugs to be made available on the NHS in England. The spokesperson added: "We know that Vertex is also working with the NHS authorities in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and expect similar access agreements to be formalised in the coming days."
