Students reported fireworks and tear gas launched at the pro-Palestine camp at UCLA with officials saying the 'senseless violence must end'at a Los Angeles university as demonstrators reported that fireworks and tear gas were hurled at them by pro-Israel supporters.
Campus police armed with batons have been called to separate the sparring groups. Security was tightened at the campus on Tuesday after officials said there were “physical altercations” between factions of protesters. Mary Osako, vice chancellor of UCLA strategic communications, said the fire service and medical personnel were on the scene.“Horrific acts of violence occurred at the encampment tonight and we immediately called law enforcement for mutual aid support,” shethat it assisted campus officers at the request of UCLA “due to multiple acts of violence within the large encampment on their campus”.
Counter-protesters attempt to move a barricade amidst clashes with UCLA protesters in support of Palestinians in Gaza The university’s chancellor, Gene Block, criticised students creating human walls to control access to campus entrances, saying that while UCLA supports peaceful protest it will not condone “activism that harms our ability to carry out our academic mission and makes people in our community feel bullied, threatened and afraid”.
