The challenges of ministering to patients, family and staff in the age of COVID-19 has been a difficult one. Rev. Dale Cudjoe: 'If I can help somebody, if I can cheer somebody, then my living won’t be in vain.'
»Chaplain Evonne Williams-Carter at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart said the past two years in the hospital have been totally different and challenging as it relates to ministering to patients, families and staff.I found it most helpful to patients and their family member as I would make a call to the family not to provide medical information, but simply have prayer with them on the phone. Family members appreciate these types of interventions,” Williams-Carter said.
“Scripture stipulates how much we need each other. So many people died not being able to see or touch their loved ones. Chaplains were the intercessors, but patients were not provided the touch of loved ones and family members who would have helped in their transitions,” Williams-Carter said. Chaplain Dale Cudjoe checks a list of patients who have requested prayer as he makes his rounds at Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus in Merrillville on Friday, January 21, 2022.
“This COVID-19 placed us in the midst of a battleground that we simply did not see coming,” she said.“Because of the death toll, they’re grieving. It’s nonstop,” Tebbe said.Tebbe said he finds himself offering words of encouragement and prayer more often to staff from those working in dietary to those performing care.
“Coming into the hospital unvaccinated with underlying medical conditions only exasperates the virus,” he said.
