Stephanie Nyombayire, spokesperson for Rwandan President Paul Kagame, tweeted that the release was "the result of a shared desire to reset US-Rwanda relationship". Washington designated him as "wrongly detained", partly because of what it called a lack of guarantees of a fair trial. He wrote that if he was pardoned and freed, he would spend the rest of his days in the U.S., "in quiet reflection".
Rusesabagina will initially be flown to Doha, where his family may join him, and then on to the United States, Qatar's Foreign Ministry said, confirming a report by the online outlet Semafor.
