Rep. Nita Lowey, the first woman to lead the House Appropriations Committee, won’t seek re-election in 2020, the New York Democrat said
WASHINGTON—Rep. Nita Lowey, the first woman to lead the powerful House Appropriations Committee, won’t seek re-election in 2020, the New York Democrat said Thursday.
Mrs. Lowey, 82 years old, will lead negotiations for House Democrats this fall to avoid another government shutdown this year. Mrs. Lowey, who represents suburbs north of New York, took the gavel of the House Appropriations Committee in January as House Democrats battled Republicans during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history earlier this year.
