The House of Representatives on Friday changed its rules to allow for remote voting during the coronavirus pandemic, the most significant change to the legislative body’s procedure in its history.U.S. Capitol May 14, 2020 in Washington, DC. Speaker Pelosi held a weekly news conference to fill questions from members of the press.House members will now be able to conduct all committee business and hold committee hearings remotely.
Lawmakers will also be able to vote on behalf of as many as 10 other House members who authorized them to do so via a letter to the House clerk. The proposal was approved along party lines, with Democrats voting 217 to 189 in favor of adopting the new rules. The changes are temporary and will only last until the public health emergency due to the coronavirus is ended.for such a measure.Democrats have for weeks been refining a remote voting proposal against Republican opposition, who say the move amounts to a power grab that defies institutional tradition.
“This legislation that passed tonight to institute a remote, proxy voting system in the House eviscerates accountability and transparency for Members of Congress,” said Rep. Andy Biggs . “It gives Speaker Pelosi more control over committee hearings and what comes to the virtual ‘floor.’”The rules change comes just before the House is set to vote on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s latest stimulus bill, the HEROES Act.
